With the last unofficial wknd. of summer upon us, I thought I'd give you a rundown of some of this summer's big winners and losers at the box office.  Now that we're paying almost $10 to sit in the dark with a bunch of strangers, it's always good to have some research on what we loved and hated at the box office.

1: Iron Man 3  Robert Downey Jrs. superhero destroyed the competition raking in $409 million.

2: Despicable Me 2  The minions and Steve Carell laughed up $350 mil, the top cartoon of 2013.

other top hits included Man of Steel (290 mil), Monsters University ($262 mil), Fast & Furious 6 ($239 mil), Star Trek Into Darkness ($227 m.), World War Z (Brad Pitt still makes the cash register ring to $199 m.), The Heat (a surprise blockbuster which made $157 m. with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy as mismatched cop partners) horror flick The Conjuring ($132 m.) and one of my faves this summer This Is The End, with Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill and many more Hollywood stars playing themselves, which totaled a nice take of $97 mil.

And the loser is......The Lone Ranger, budgeted at $215 million, it only brought in $88 mil.

Other flops: Pacific Rim, a monster movie that scared up only $99 million of it's $199 mil. cost to produce, White House Down made back $72 mil of it's $150 mil. budget, Will Smith flopped in After Earth ($61 m.) and Harrison Ford barely totaled $6 m. for the brutal Paranoia.  And let's not forget that Twitter and Facebook word-of-social media did nothing to help Kick-Ass 2 which sunk with only $23 mil brought it, even though it blew up on social media.  Hype ain't what is seems sometimes when it comes to enjoying movies.
