Scholastic's Virtual Summer Read-A-Palooza

Want to pry your kids away from their screen time to get a little reading in this summer? Scholastic is here to help. The book publisher’s Summer Read-a-Palooza is back to motivate children to keep up their reading and keep their minds sharp while school is out.

The annual program is totally free and this year it runs through September 4th, 2020. It encourages kids to make reading a daily habit, but it’s pretty unstructured and doesn’t require specific books. Kids can choose their own titles and read at their own pace. To sign up, download Scholastic’s new free app Home Base and create an account. From there, kids log their reading “streaks” - the number of days they’ve read in a row - to unlock prizes.

The program lets kids choose their own avatar, earn virtual rewards and make new virtual friends. There are also games to play, characters to interact with, and stories to listen to. And it’s not just beneficial to your youngster, participating in Read-a-Palooza will help Scholastic and The United Way donate 100-thousand books to kids in need.
