CDC's Guidelines on How To Celebrate Halloween This Year

While Halloween isn’t completely canceled this year, the CDC has pretty much taken all the fun out of it. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has just come out with their Halloween guidelines for 2020, and sadly of folks’ favorite traditions aren’t exactly recommended this year due to the coronavirus.

“Many traditional Halloween activities can be high-risk for spreading viruses,” the agency wrote in the advisory.

Among the high-risk activities:

  • Crowded costume parties held indoors.
  • Haunted houses, hayrides and tractor rides with folks outside your household.
  • Door-to-door trick or treating, as well as trunk or treating activities.
  • Traveling to a rural fall festival outside your own community
  • They also warn against wearing a costume mask that isn’t “made of two or more layers of breathable fabric that covers your mouth and nose and doesn’t leave gaps around your face."

But the CDC isn’t taking away all the fun and has offered some “low-risk” and “medium-risk” Halloween alternatives.

Low-risk alternatives include:

  • Socially distanced pumpkin carving.
  • Virtual Halloween competitions.
  • Halloween movie nights.
  • Socially distanced outdoor scavenger hunts.

Medium-risk alternatives include:

  • “One –way trick-or-treating” in which goodie bags are lined up away from a house so families can grab and go.
  • Outdoor Halloween parties where participants wear masks and stay six feet apart.
