STUDY: Eating Chocolate For Breakfast Could Help Burn Fat

Want to start your day with something sweet? New research finds eating chocolate in the morning may not lead to the weight gain you’d suspect and it might come with some surprising benefits. Research from Brigham and Women’s Hospital shows eating a high intake of chocolate in the a.m. could actually help with fat burning.

The study of postmenopausal women consumed 100 grams of milk chocolate either within an hour of waking up or an hour of going to bed. Researchers then compared weight gain and other measures to the unlucky participants who didn’t eat chocolate. And they found that having it in the early morning or evening can influence hunger and appetite, sleep and more. Beyond the fat burning, the morning dose of chocolate could actually help reduce blood glucose levels and eating it at night could also alter metabolism the next day.

“Our findings highlight that not only ‘what’ but also ‘when’ we eat can impact physiological mechanisms involved in the regulation of body weight,” explains Dr. Frank A.J.L. Scheer, a neuroscientist with the department of medicine and neurology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Study authors say further studies on both men and younger women are needed to distinguish if the benefits are the result of the rewarding effect of chocolate.
