Swietowac is the polish word for celebrate, as today is the Polish equivalent to St. Patty's Day for the Irish, or Columbus Day for Italians.
The polka party is on up the road in Buffalo, the unofficial American capital of Dyngus Day. There's a grand parade on Broadway (the street made famous by local boys Goo Goo Dolls hit song) followed by a day of polkas led by a band named Those Idiots.
And the topper for Dyngus Day? People show their affection of the opposite sex by squirting women with water guns, and beating men with pussy willows! Why? Not quite sure, but it is a tradition in Buffalo that has survived the #MeToo generation.
Here's how last year's celebration looked as we wish a Happy Dyngus Day to all our Polish family, including my wife Angela, her parents Debra and Big Joe (true Polish and proud), my sisters-in-law Rebecca and Erica, and little brother Steven. Nostrovia and twoje zdrowie (cheers)!
